Summer may be over, but sometimes it leaves a few reminders behind.
After months of sun exposure, you may notice that brown spots look darker, uneven tone is more noticeable, or areas of pigmentation that had faded seem to have returned. If your skin is looking a little less even after summer, fall is the perfect time to take a closer look at your skin goals and build a plan for the months ahead.
At Meg Fox Aesthetics, we think of this as your Fall Skin Reset: a chance to address pigmentation, support healthier skin, and get back into a consistent routine after summer.
And when it comes to pigment, the best approach often isn't just one treatment. Depending on your skin and the type of pigmentation you're experiencing, your plan may include laser treatments, microneedling and medical-grade skincare working together.
First: Why Does Pigmentation Look Worse After Summer?
Pigmentation is your skin's response to a variety of factors, but UV exposure (aka time in the sun) is one of the biggest contributors to visible discoloration.
Over time, sun exposure can show up as:
- Brown spots and sun spots
- Uneven skin tone
- Freckling
- Areas of discoloration
- Dull or uneven-looking skin
- Existing pigmentation becoming more noticeable
And while a summer tan may fade, some of that underlying pigment doesn't necessarily disappear with it. That's why fall is one of our favorite times to shift the focus from protecting your skin during summer to correcting some of the visible effects of sun exposure.
BBL: Targeting Visible Sun Damage & Pigmentation
If brown spots, redness and uneven tone are your primary concerns, BBL (BroadBand Light) may be part of your treatment plan. BBL uses light energy to target visible pigmentation and redness, making it an especially popular treatment for patients looking to improve the appearance of sun damage, brown spots and uneven skin tone.
At MFA, we often recommend a series of treatments based on your starting point and skin goals rather than thinking of BBL as a one-and-done treatment. And it's not just for the face. Don't forget about other areas that have seen years of sun exposure, like the neck, décolleté and hands.
MOXI: A Fresh Start for Sun-Exposed Skin
MOXI is another fall favorite, particularly for patients looking to address early signs of sun damage while improving the overall appearance and quality of their skin. This fractional laser treatment can help improve the appearance of uneven pigmentation, tone and texture while supporting a brighter, more refreshed complexion.
One of the things we love about MOXI is its versatility. It can fit into a larger skin plan whether you're beginning to notice pigmentation or you're already committed to maintaining the results of more corrective treatments.
Depending on your concerns, your provider may recommend MOXI, BBL or a combination of the two (at MFA we call that a Foxy MOXI!)
Microneedling: Think Beyond the Brown Spots
Pigment isn't always the only thing we want to address after summer. Maybe you're also noticing rougher texture, enlarged-looking pores, fine lines or an overall lack of glow. That's where microneedling can become another part of your Fall Skin Reset.
Microneedling creates controlled microchannels in the skin to stimulate its natural repair process and support collagen and elastin production. Rather than directly targeting pigment in the same way as BBL, microneedling can be used to support improvements in overall skin quality, texture and tone.
At MFA, we may also pair microneedling with Ariessence® Pure PDGF+ as part of a customized treatment plan to help boost your collagen production and reduce the recovery timeline.
Don't Skip the Skincare
This might be the least exciting answer, but it's one of the most important:
You can't out-treat an inconsistent skincare routine.
In-office treatments can do a lot, but what you're doing with your skin every morning and evening matters too, especially when pigmentation is a concern.
A customized medical-grade skincare routine may include products designed to support:
- Pigment correction: Ingredients and products selected to help improve the appearance of discoloration and uneven tone.
- Cell turnover: Depending on your skin, retinoids or other active ingredients may be incorporated to support skin renewal.
- Antioxidant support: Vitamin C and other antioxidants can become an important part of your morning routine.
- Barrier support: Healthy-looking skin isn't just about active ingredients. Hydration and barrier support matter, particularly when you're undergoing professional treatments.
And then there's the non-negotiable:
SPF. Every. Single. Day.
If we're investing time and money into improving pigmentation, protecting your skin from additional UV exposure is essential. That means broad-spectrum SPF every morning (even when summer is over!)
The Best Results Often Come From a Plan
When someone comes to MFA and says, “I want to get rid of these brown spots,” our first question isn't necessarily, “Which laser should we book?” We want to understand what we're looking at, what's contributing to it, what else you'd like to improve, and what you're currently doing at home.
Your Fall Skin Reset might look like:
- BBL + medical-grade skincare for a patient primarily concerned with visible sun damage and uneven pigmentation.
- MOXI + skincare for someone looking to address pigmentation while refreshing overall tone and texture.
- Microneedling + skincare for someone whose goals also include collagen support and improved skin quality.
Or it could involve a combination of treatments over several months. That's the difference between simply booking a treatment and creating a skin plan.
What About Melasma?
This is where customization becomes especially important. Not all pigmentation is the same. Melasma, for example, behaves differently than traditional sun spots and can be influenced by factors including sun exposure, heat and hormones. That means the treatment that works beautifully for one person's brown spots may not be the right choice for someone experiencing melasma.
If you're unsure what type of pigmentation you're seeing, that's a great reason to start with a consultation rather than trying to diagnose or treat it yourself.
